What is Kybella,
and how does it work?
At Skin Clinic Med Spa, Kybella in Riverside offers something rare in aesthetics: a genuinely permanent result. It’s the only FDA-approved injectable designed to destroy the fat beneath your chin — no surgery, no liposuction, no anaesthetic.
Kybella contains deoxycholic acid, a synthetic form of a molecule your body already produces to break down dietary fat. Injected directly into the submental fat pocket, it ruptures the membranes of fat cells, and your body then metabolises and clears the destroyed cells over the following weeks.
Here’s what makes it different from almost everything else we offer: those fat cells are gone for good. Unlike Botox, which wears off, or filler, which absorbs, destroyed fat cells cannot regenerate. Provided your weight stays stable, the result is permanent — which is why most patients complete their course and never need to return.
Kybella was approved by the FDA in 2015 on the strength of large phase III trials, and it’s approved specifically for submental fullness. Every treatment is performed by licensed injectors under the medical direction of Dr. Syed W. Bokhari, MD — proper technique matters here, because the anatomy beneath the chin includes nerves that must be respected. Many patients pair it with chin filler for profile balance.
What Kybella
treats
Double Chin
The fat pocket beneath the chin — the only area Kybella is FDA-approved to treat.
Jawline Definition
Removing submental fat reveals a cleaner, sharper jaw contour beneath it.
Side Profile
Restores a defined angle between chin and neck — often the most striking change.
Genetic Fullness
Targets submental fat that persists regardless of weight loss or exercise.
Stubborn Pockets
Addresses the under-chin fullness that lingers even after reaching a healthy weight.
Permanent Reduction
Destroyed fat cells cannot return — once they're gone, they're gone for good.
Surgery Alternative
For patients who want submental contouring without liposuction or a neck lift.
Upper Neck Fullness
Fullness just below the submental area can sometimes be addressed alongside.
Once those cells
are gone, they're gone
Almost everything else we offer is temporary. Kybella isn't. Deoxycholic acid destroys the fat cell membrane, and destroyed fat cells don't regenerate — so provided your weight stays reasonably stable, you finish your course and you're done. No maintenance appointments, no top-ups.
- Fat cells are destroyed, not shrunk
- No maintenance treatments needed
- Results hold with stable body weight
- Significant weight gain can still enlarge remaining cells
You'll look fuller
before you look slimmer
We'd rather tell you plainly: the swelling after Kybella is substantial, and it's the main reason some patients don't complete their course. The first two to three days involve real puffiness and tenderness under the chin. Patients who plan around it — and understand it's a sign the treatment is working — sail through.
- Peak swelling in the first 48 hours
- Visible puffiness for up to 1–2 weeks
- Numbness and firm nodules are normal
- Treat before a weekend and avoid events for a month
Fat, not
loose skin
Kybella removes fat — it does not tighten skin. If your under-chin fullness is mostly skin laxity rather than fat, removing the fat beneath can actually make loose skin more apparent. This is why assessment matters, and why we may recommend threads, microneedling or a surgical opinion instead.
- Ideal when the fullness is genuinely fat
- Requires reasonable skin elasticity to retract
- Not a treatment for loose or sagging neck skin
- We'll recommend an alternative if it isn't right for you
The treatment process
step by step
Consultation & assessment
We assess the fat pocket beneath your chin and, importantly, your skin elasticity — because Kybella removes fat but doesn't tighten skin. We'll confirm you're a genuine candidate.
Mapping the injection grid
A temporary grid is marked on the treatment area so injections are placed precisely and evenly, keeping well clear of the surrounding nerve anatomy.
Numbing
Topical numbing and often ice are applied. Some patients also receive local anaesthetic — the injections do sting, and we take comfort seriously.
The injections
Kybella is delivered through a series of small injections across the grid — up to 50 in a session depending on the area. This takes only 15–30 minutes.
Ice, aftercare & next session
We ice the area and send you home prepared for swelling. Your next session is booked at least four weeks later to allow full healing.
Swelling and results,
what to expect
Be honest with yourself about the swelling — you will look fuller before you look slimmer. Plan your first session well before any event, and ideally with a quiet week afterwards.
How to prep & care
around each session
Before your session
- Avoid blood thinners, fish oil and vitamin E for 5–7 days (with your doctor's approval)
- Skip alcohol for 24 hours to reduce bruising
- Tell us about any difficulty swallowing, bleeding disorder or prior neck surgery
- Reschedule if you have an active infection in the treatment area
- Do not book within 3–4 weeks of a wedding, holiday or photos
- Plan a quiet few days — ideally treatment before a weekend
- Arrange a scarf or high collar you're comfortable wearing
After your session
- Ice in 15-minute intervals for the first 24–48 hours
- Sleep with your head elevated for the first few nights
- Take paracetamol for discomfort; avoid ibuprofen for the first day
- Skip strenuous exercise, saunas and hot yoga for 48 hours
- Expect numbness and firm nodules under the chin — both are normal and resolve
- A chin strap or compression can help some patients; we'll advise
- Contact us immediately about difficulty swallowing or an uneven smile
How much does Kybella cost
in Riverside?

Kybella with
chin filler
A weak or recessed chin can make submental fullness look worse than it is. Many patients get their best profile by combining the two: Kybella removes the fat below, while chin filler projects and balances the structure above. We'll assess your profile as a whole and tell you honestly whether you need one, the other, or both.

Skin Clinic for Kybella
Anatomy taken seriously
The area beneath the chin contains nerves that affect your smile and swallowing. Our injectors map every grid carefully and inject at the correct depth, under physician direction.
Realistic session planning
We tell you upfront roughly how many sessions your fullness will need and quote the full course — rather than selling one session and revealing the rest later.
Honest candidacy
If your fullness is loose skin rather than fat, Kybella won't help and could make it look worse. We'll say so and recommend something that actually works for you.

Yes. Deoxycholic acid destroys the fat cell membrane, and destroyed fat cells don't regenerate. Provided your weight stays reasonably stable, your result is permanent and no maintenance treatments are needed. Significant weight gain can still enlarge the fat cells that remain.
Most patients need two to four sessions spaced at least four weeks apart, and those with more significant fullness may need up to six. We'll estimate your likely number at consultation based on the size of the fat pocket, and reassess as you progress.
Honestly, it's significant — this is the part patients underestimate. Swelling peaks in the first 48 hours and you'll look fuller under the chin before you look slimmer. Visible puffiness can last one to two weeks. Most people work through it, but plan your first session well away from any event.
The injections do sting — deoxycholic acid causes a burning sensation as it works. We use topical numbing and ice, and can add local anaesthetic. The session itself only takes 15 to 30 minutes, and the discomfort settles quickly afterwards, replaced by swelling and tenderness.
No, and this is important. Kybella removes fat only. If your under-chin fullness is mainly loose skin, removing the fat beneath can make the laxity more noticeable. We assess fat versus skin elasticity at consultation and will recommend a different treatment if that's what you need.
Kybella isn't suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an active infection in the treatment area, a history of difficulty swallowing, bleeding disorders, or previous surgery in the treatment area. It's also not right if your fullness is primarily skin laxity. We screen for all of this at consultation.
Once the swelling settles at around two to four weeks you'll start to see change, with improvement continuing for months as your body clears the destroyed fat cells. Final results typically appear a few months after your last session.
What our patients say
Kybella patients say
“I'd had a double chin my whole life regardless of my weight. Three sessions and it's genuinely gone — and knowing it can't come back is the best part.”
“They warned me about the swelling and they weren't exaggerating — but they'd told me exactly what to expect, so I planned around it and it was fine. My profile is completely different now.”
“What I appreciated was the honesty. They told me I'd need chin filler as well to balance my profile properly, and they were right. The combination made all the difference.”
