What is microneedling with PRP,
and how does it work?
At Skin Clinic Med Spa, microneedling with PRP in Riverside — often called the vampire facial — pairs two treatments that work beautifully together: collagen-induction microneedling, and platelet-rich plasma drawn from your own blood.
Microneedling uses a medical-grade device to create thousands of microscopic channels in the skin. These tiny, controlled injuries trigger your body’s natural wound-healing response, prompting it to produce fresh collagen and elastin — the proteins that keep skin firm, smooth and resilient. Because the treatment works by rebuilding your own tissue rather than removing it, results build gradually and look entirely natural.
PRP takes it further. We draw a small sample of your blood, spin it in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, then apply and inject that plasma into the freshly opened channels. Those platelets are packed with growth factors that accelerate healing and amplify collagen production. As a result, you typically see faster recovery and a more dramatic improvement than microneedling alone.
Every treatment is performed under the medical direction of Dr. Syed W. Bokhari, MD. Because it uses no light or heat, microneedling is safe for all skin tones — unlike many laser resurfacing options. It also pairs well with our RevePeel chemical peels in a longer-term skin plan.
What microneedling
with PRP treats
Acne Scarring
Breaks down scar tissue and rebuilds collagen to smooth rolling and boxcar acne scars.
Uneven Texture
Refines rough, bumpy or irregular texture for skin that feels as smooth as it looks.
Fine Lines & Wrinkles
Stimulates new collagen to soften early lines around the eyes, mouth and forehead.
Enlarged Pores
Tightens the skin around pores so they appear visibly smaller and less congested.
Hyperpigmentation
Encourages cell turnover to fade sun spots, melasma and post-acne marks over time.
Skin Laxity
Rebuilds the collagen and elastin that keep skin firm, for a subtly tighter, lifted look.
Stretch Marks
Improves the texture and appearance of stretch marks on the abdomen, thighs and arms.
Thinning Hair
PRP injected into the scalp can stimulate dormant follicles and improve hair density.
The gold standard
for textural scars
Microneedling with PRP is one of the most effective non-surgical treatments for acne scarring. The needles break down fibrous scar tissue while PRP floods the area with growth factors, rebuilding the skin from beneath rather than simply resurfacing the top.
- Effective on rolling and boxcar scars
- Rebuilds tissue from underneath rather than sanding it away
- Safe for deeper skin tones, unlike many lasers
- Typically 3–6 sessions for meaningful correction
Your own growth factors,
amplified
PRP is concentrated from your own blood, so there's nothing foreign involved and no risk of allergic reaction. Those platelets release growth factors that speed healing and boost collagen — which usually means shorter downtime and a more noticeable result than microneedling alone.
- Uses your own plasma — nothing synthetic
- Speeds healing and shortens redness
- Amplifies collagen production for better results
- Also used for hair restoration on the scalp
Safe where lasers
often aren't
Because microneedling uses no light or heat, it doesn't carry the risk of pigment change that makes many laser resurfacing treatments unsuitable for deeper skin tones. It's one of the safest ways to treat scarring and texture in Fitzpatrick types IV–VI.
- No light or heat — no pigment-change risk
- Suitable for Fitzpatrick types I–VI
- A safe alternative to ablative laser resurfacing
- Still requires diligent sun protection afterwards
The treatment process
step by step
Consultation & skin assessment
We assess your skin, discuss your goals and medical history, and confirm how many sessions you're likely to need for the result you want.
Blood draw & PRP preparation
We draw a small sample of your blood — much like a routine lab test — and spin it in a centrifuge for about 10 minutes to separate and concentrate the platelet-rich plasma.
Cleanse & numb
Your skin is thoroughly cleansed and a topical numbing cream is applied for 20–30 minutes, so the treatment stays comfortable throughout.
Microneedling & PRP application
The device is passed over the treatment area at a depth chosen for your concern, then your PRP is applied and micro-injected so it absorbs deep into the fresh channels.
Soothe & aftercare
We finish with a calming serum and SPF, then send you home with clear aftercare. The whole visit takes about 60–90 minutes.
Your recovery,
day by day
Results are cumulative. Most patients need 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, with improvement continuing for months afterwards.
How to prep & care
for the best results
Before your appointment
- Stop retinoids, acids and exfoliants 5–7 days before
- Avoid sun exposure and arrive without a fresh tan or sunburn
- Eat a full meal and hydrate well — it makes the blood draw easier
- Avoid blood thinners, fish oil and alcohol for 24–48 hours (with your doctor's approval)
- Tell us if you're prone to cold sores so we can prescribe antiviral cover
- Arrive with clean skin and no makeup
- Reschedule if you have an active breakout, infection or open wound
After your appointment
- Leave the PRP on your skin for the rest of the day — don't wash it off
- Use only gentle cleanser and the products we recommend for 72 hours
- No makeup for 24–48 hours to let the channels close
- SPF 50 daily and strict sun avoidance for at least two weeks
- Skip strenuous exercise, saunas, pools and hot yoga for 48 hours
- Don't pick or scratch flaking skin — let it shed naturally
- Resume retinoids and acids only after 5–7 days

Skin Clinic for microneedling
Medical-grade, not spa-grade
We use a medical device at clinical depths under physician direction — not a cosmetic roller. Depth is what separates real collagen induction from a surface treatment.
Proper PRP protocol
Your blood is drawn and spun on site by trained providers, then used immediately. Preparation quality directly determines how effective the plasma is.
Honest expectations
We'll tell you how many sessions you realistically need and what microneedling can't fix. If another treatment suits you better, we'll say so.

Microneedling with PRP at Skin Clinic Med Spa starts at $650 per session, including the blood draw, PRP preparation and post-care. Microneedling without PRP starts at $350. We apply a strong topical numbing cream for 20–30 minutes beforehand, so most patients feel pressure and vibration rather than pain. Bonier areas like the forehead and jawline can feel more intense, and deeper settings for scarring are more noticeable.
Expect 2–3 days of redness resembling a moderate sunburn, sometimes with mild swelling. Skin may feel dry or sandpapery for a few days as it renews. Most patients return to work the next day and wear makeup after 24–48 hours.
Most patients need three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Texture and early lines often respond within three; significant acne scarring usually needs six. Results keep building for up to six months after your final session.
Yes. Because it uses no light or heat, microneedling avoids the pigment-change risk associated with many laser treatments, making it one of the safest options for Fitzpatrick types IV–VI. Diligent sun protection afterwards is still essential.
PRP is platelet-rich plasma concentrated from a small sample of your own blood. Because it comes from you, there's no risk of allergic reaction or rejection. The platelets release growth factors that speed healing and boost collagen production.
You'll notice a glow within a week, but the meaningful change is gradual — new collagen takes weeks to form. Most patients see clear improvement after their second or third session, with results continuing to build for up to six months.
Yes, though not on the same day. Microneedling pairs well with chemical peels and injectables as part of a longer-term plan. We'll sequence your treatments properly and space them so your skin has time to recover.
What our patients say
microneedling patients say
“Six sessions in and my acne scars are genuinely so much softer. Jessica was upfront that it would take a full course and she was right — no overpromising, just results.”
“I was nervous about the blood draw but it was quick and painless. Redness was gone in two days and my skin has never looked smoother or more even.”
“As someone with deeper skin I was told lasers were risky. They recommended microneedling with PRP instead and my texture and pigmentation have improved so much.”
