What is a PLLA thread lift,
and how does it work?
At Skin Clinic Med Spa, a PLLA thread lift in Riverside offers something unusual among non-surgical treatments: it does two things at once. It physically repositions sagging tissue for an immediate lift, and it stimulates your own collagen for months afterwards.
The threads are made from poly-L-lactic acid — the same biostimulatory material used in Sculptra, and a polymer used in dissolvable surgical sutures for decades. Using a fine cannula, your injector places the threads beneath the skin along carefully planned vectors. Barbed (cog) threads have tiny bidirectional barbs that grip the tissue and hold it in its lifted position, while smooth (mono) threads don’t lift mechanically but stimulate collagen for firmness and texture.
Here’s what makes PLLA distinctive. Your body treats each thread as something to build around, laying down fresh collagen along its length. Because PLLA dissolves slowly — over roughly 12 to 18 months, considerably longer than PDO — it provides a much longer window of collagen stimulation. By the time the thread has fully absorbed, what holds your result is your own new collagen. Results typically last 12 to 24 months.
Every treatment is performed by licensed injectors under the medical direction of Dr. Syed W. Bokhari, MD. Threads work beautifully alongside Sculptra for foundational volume and dermal fillers for contour — lift, structure and definition together.
Where thread lifts
do their best work
Early Jowls
Repositions softening tissue along the jaw — the most common reason patients come in for threads.
Jawline Definition
Restores a cleaner jaw contour and a sharper transition between jaw and neck.
Midface & Cheeks
Lifts descended cheek tissue back toward the cheekbone, restoring a more youthful triangle.
Nasolabial Folds
Softens deepening folds by lifting the tissue above them rather than filling them in.
Marionette Lines
Lifts the heavy lines running from mouth corners toward the chin.
Brow Lift
Subtly elevates a heavy or dropping brow for a more open, rested eye area.
Neck Laxity
Tightens mild sagging under the chin and along the upper neck.
Skin Quality
Fine smooth threads stimulate collagen for firmness and texture without mechanical lifting.
Why we use
PLLA threads
PDO threads are the most common and least expensive, but they absorb within about six to eight months. PLLA takes twelve to eighteen months to dissolve, which means a far longer window of collagen stimulation — and results that typically last twice as long. It's the same material as Sculptra, chosen for exactly that biostimulatory quality.
- PLLA dissolves over 12–18 months vs 6–8 for PDO
- Longer collagen stimulation means longer-lasting results
- Same biostimulatory polymer used in Sculptra
- Costs more per thread, but needs replacing less often
Threads suit a
specific window
This is where most thread lift disappointment comes from. Threads work beautifully for mild to moderate laxity in patients roughly 35 to 55 with reasonable skin quality. If you have significant sagging or heavy, sun-damaged skin, threads will underdeliver — and a surgical lift is the honest recommendation.
- Ideal for mild to moderate laxity, roughly ages 35–55
- Needs reasonable skin thickness and elasticity to hold
- Not a substitute for a surgical facelift
- We'll refer you to a surgeon if that's what you actually need
Better together
than alone
Threads reposition tissue but don't replace lost volume. Patients who get the most natural results usually combine them: Sculptra or filler rebuilds the underlying foundation first, then threads lift and reposition what's there. We'll sequence this properly across your visits.
- Sculptra rebuilds foundational collagen and volume
- Filler restores contour and definition precisely
- Threads reposition and lift the tissue itself
- Sequencing matters — we plan it across visits
The treatment process
step by step
Consultation & candidacy
We assess your skin quality and degree of laxity, and — crucially — confirm you're in the right window for threads. Too little laxity and you won't see much; too much and you need surgery.
Mapping your vectors
Your injector marks the entry points and the precise directions the threads will follow. This planning stage determines the entire result and isn't rushed.
Cleanse & anaesthetise
The area is thoroughly cleansed and local anaesthetic is injected at the entry points and along each thread path, so the placement itself is comfortable.
Thread placement
Threads are introduced through a fine cannula along the mapped vectors, then gently drawn to lift the tissue into its new position. The full treatment takes 45–60 minutes.
Assess, trim & aftercare
We check symmetry with you in the mirror, trim any excess thread at the entry points, and send you home with detailed aftercare — the movement restrictions matter enormously.
Your thread lift,
week by week
The lift you see on day one settles considerably. Judge your result at week four, not week one — and expect it to keep improving for months.
How to prep & care
for a lasting lift
Before your treatment
- Avoid blood thinners, fish oil and vitamin E for 5–7 days (with your doctor's approval)
- Skip alcohol for 24–48 hours to reduce bruising
- Tell us about any autoimmune condition or history of keloid scarring
- Reschedule if you have an active infection, breakout or cold sore
- Avoid dental work within two weeks either side of treatment
- Allow at least 4 weeks before a major event — bruising is common
- Arrange a quiet few days afterwards; this isn't a lunch-hour treatment
After your treatment
- Sleep on your back with your head elevated for at least a week
- Avoid exaggerated facial expressions, wide yawning and chewing gum for 2 weeks
- Stick to soft foods for several days — heavy chewing shifts the threads
- No facial massage, facials or dental work for 3–4 weeks
- Skip strenuous exercise, saunas and hot yoga for 2 weeks
- Don't rub, press or sleep on the treated areas
- Use cool compresses for swelling in the first 48 hours
- Call us about any visible thread, persistent dimpling, or signs of infection
How much does a PLLA thread lift cost
in Riverside?
A PLLA thread lift at Skin Clinic Med Spa starts at $1,500, with the exact price depending on how many threads your treatment requires and which areas we’re lifting. PLLA threads cost more than PDO, but they dissolve more slowly and typically deliver notably longer-lasting results.
Most patients need four to eight barbed threads for the lower face, or more for a fuller treatment including the neck. Because thread count varies so much by anatomy and degree of laxity, we quote precisely at consultation — and we’ll tell you honestly if threads aren’t the right answer for you.

Lift, volume &
a full-face plan
Facial ageing happens on several levels at once — bone and volume loss underneath, collagen decline in the skin, and tissue descent on top. Threads address the descent, Sculptra and filler address what's underneath, and tox handles movement. Ask us about building a sequenced plan rather than treating one layer in isolation.

Skin Clinic for threads
Vector planning, not guesswork
Where the threads go and which direction they pull determines everything. Ours are mapped carefully before a single thread is placed.
Physician-supervised
Threads are a minor surgical procedure, not a facial. Care is overseen by our Medical Director, Dr. Syed W. Bokhari, MD, with proper sterile technique.
Honest about candidacy
If your laxity is beyond what threads can address, we'll tell you and refer you to a surgeon. Selling a thread lift that underdelivers helps nobody.

Which is right for you?
Both are absorbable thread lifts, and both work. The difference is how long the material lasts — and therefore how long your result does.

A PLLA thread lift at Skin Clinic Med Spa starts at $1,500 for the lower face, with pricing based on how many threads your anatomy requires. A full face typically runs around $2,400 and face with neck around $3,200. We quote precisely at consultation. (Please confirm current pricing with our team.)
Typically 12 to 24 months. The threads themselves dissolve over roughly 12 to 18 months, but the collagen they stimulate along their path continues holding the result afterwards. That's noticeably longer than PDO threads, which generally last 6 to 12 months.
Both are absorbable, but the material differs. PDO absorbs in about 6 to 8 months; PLLA — the same polymer as Sculptra — takes 12 to 18 months. That longer presence means a longer window of collagen stimulation, which is why PLLA results typically last around twice as long, though the threads cost more.
No, and it's important to be clear about this. A surgical facelift removes excess skin and repositions deeper structures, with results lasting many years. A thread lift repositions existing tissue without removing anything, delivering a subtler improvement for 12 to 24 months. If your laxity is significant, we'll recommend a surgical consultation instead.
Local anaesthetic is injected along each thread path, so placement is comfortable. Afterwards expect tightness, tenderness, swelling and often bruising for several days. Most patients take two to three days before feeling social, though bruising can last one to two weeks — plan at least four weeks before an event.
They sit beneath the skin and shouldn't be visible. Occasionally you may feel slight tightness or a thread edge in the early weeks, and minor puckering at entry points is normal and settles. Contact us if you see a visible thread or persistent dimpling so we can address it early.
Threads work best for mild to moderate laxity in patients roughly 35 to 55, with reasonable skin thickness and elasticity to hold the lift. They're less effective with significant sagging, very thin or heavily sun-damaged skin. We'll assess this honestly at your consultation.
Yes, and most patients get better results doing so. Sculptra or filler rebuilds the volume and structure underneath, threads reposition the tissue on top, and Botox handles expression lines. We'll sequence these properly rather than doing everything at once.
What our patients say
thread lift patients say
“My jawline had started to soften and I wasn't ready for surgery. The lift was visible the same day and looks completely natural now that it's settled. Eighteen months on it's still holding.”
“They were straight with me that I'd need filler first to rebuild volume before threads would look right. That sequencing advice made all the difference — the result is so much more natural than my friend's.”
“Bruised more than I expected but they'd warned me clearly, so I'd planned around it. By week three it looked incredible and my skin genuinely feels firmer months later.”
