The basics

What is PRP hair restoration,
and does it actually work?

At Skin Clinic Med Spa, PRP hair restoration in Riverside uses your own blood to stimulate hair follicles that have weakened but haven’t yet died — a drug-free option for men and women watching their hair thin.

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. We draw a small sample of your blood, spin it in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets to several times their normal level, then inject that plasma into the thinning areas of your scalp. Those platelets release growth factors that act on the stem cells around the hair follicle, prompting dormant follicles back into their growth phase, extending that phase, and improving blood supply to the area.

Does it work? The honest answer: the evidence is genuinely promising, but it isn’t a cure. Multiple controlled studies show meaningful increases in hair density and thickness for androgenetic alopecia after a course of three monthly sessions, with most patients seeing change from around month three. That said, results vary between individuals, PRP works best when hair loss is caught early, and it cannot regrow hair from follicles that are already gone.

Every treatment is performed under the medical direction of Dr. Syed W. Bokhari, MD. Because PRP comes from your own body, there’s no risk of allergic reaction. It also pairs well with our microneedling with PRP for the skin.

Honest expectations

What PRP can
and cannot do

We'd rather set expectations properly than oversell. PRP can thicken existing hair, reactivate dormant follicles and slow ongoing loss. It cannot regrow hair where the follicle has already died — which is why timing matters more than almost anything else.

  • Best results when hair loss is caught early
  • Thickens existing hair and improves density
  • Cannot revive follicles that are already gone
  • Requires ongoing maintenance to hold results
For women especially

A real option
where few exist

Women have far fewer approved hair-loss treatments than men — finasteride isn't suitable for women of childbearing age, and minoxidil doesn't work for everyone. Because PRP is drug-free and hormone-free, it's become one of the most valuable options for female pattern hair loss and postpartum shedding.

  • Drug-free and hormone-free
  • Safe while trying to conceive, unlike finasteride
  • Effective for the widening centre part
  • Supports recovery from postpartum shedding
Combination therapy

Works best as
part of a plan

The strongest published results come from combining PRP with other therapies. We'll look at your whole picture — including minoxidil, finasteride where appropriate, nutritional deficiencies and thyroid function — rather than treating PRP as a standalone fix.

  • Combines well with minoxidil and finasteride
  • We screen for iron, vitamin D and thyroid issues
  • Can be paired with scalp microneedling
  • Also used to support hair transplant recovery

The treatment process
step by step

01

Consultation & scalp assessment

We examine your scalp and pattern of loss, review your medical history and any medications, and confirm whether PRP is genuinely likely to help you — or whether something else would serve you better.

02

Blood draw

We draw a small sample of blood from your arm, much like a routine lab test. Eating well and hydrating beforehand makes this quick and easy.

03

Centrifuge & concentration

Your blood is spun for around ten minutes to separate and concentrate the platelet-rich plasma from the other components.

04

Numb the scalp

We apply topical numbing and can use a cooling device or nerve block for comfort. The scalp is sensitive, so we take this step seriously.

05

Targeted scalp injections

Your PRP is injected in a grid across the thinning areas — hairline, part, crown and vertex as needed — at the correct depth to reach the follicles. Takes about 20–30 minutes.

What to expect

Your hair restoration
timeline

Week 1
Mild scalp tenderness and possible slight swelling for a day or two. You may notice nothing else — that's expected.
Month 1–2
Some patients experience a temporary increase in shedding as weak hairs make way for new growth. This is normal and passes.
Month 3–4
The first real signs: reduced shedding, finer baby hairs appearing, and hair that feels thicker at the root.
Month 6+
Peak results — improved density and thickness. Maintenance sessions every 3–6 months preserve what you've gained.

Hair grows slowly, so patience is essential. Meaningful change is measured in months, not weeks — and ongoing maintenance is what protects your results.

Simple, guided care

How to prep & care
around your sessions

Before your appointment

Prep, about 1 week ahead
  • Eat a full meal and hydrate well — it makes the blood draw much easier
  • Avoid blood thinners, fish oil and anti-inflammatories for 5–7 days (with your doctor's approval)
  • Skip alcohol for 24 hours beforehand
  • Wash your hair the morning of your appointment; arrive with a clean, product-free scalp
  • Avoid smoking, which reduces platelet quality and healing
  • Tell us about all medications, especially for blood pressure or clotting
  • Reschedule if you have a scalp infection, active psoriasis flare or open wound

After your appointment

Aftercare, ~3 days
  • Don't wash your hair for at least 24 hours
  • Avoid harsh shampoos, dyes, bleach and chemical treatments for 3–5 days
  • Skip strenuous exercise, saunas and swimming for 48 hours
  • Avoid direct sun on the scalp and wear a loose hat if needed
  • Don't use ice or anti-inflammatories — they can blunt the healing response PRP relies on
  • Mild tenderness is normal; take paracetamol rather than ibuprofen if needed
  • Keep your session schedule — consistent spacing matters more than people realise

The best time to treat
is now

Hair loss is progressive, and PRP works by rescuing follicles that are still alive. Every month of waiting means fewer follicles left to save — which is why patients who start at the first sign of thinning consistently get the best results. If you're noticing more hair in the shower or a widening part, book a consultation now rather than next year.

Why choose us

Why patients trust us
Skin Clinic for PRP

Evidence-based protocol

We follow the treatment schedule supported by published research — three monthly sessions then maintenance — rather than an arbitrary package designed to sell visits.

Proper preparation

Your blood is drawn and spun on site by trained providers and used immediately. Preparation quality directly determines how concentrated and effective the plasma is.

We'll tell you if it won't help

If your follicles are too far gone, or if your hair loss points to a thyroid or nutritional cause, we'll say so and refer you appropriately rather than sell you a course.

PRP at Skin Clinic Med Spa starts at $700 per session, including the blood draw, PRP preparation and scalp treatment. Because the evidence supports an initial course of three monthly sessions, we offer package pricing — typically around $1,850 for the course. You'll get a full quote at your consultation. (Please confirm current pricing with our team.)

The evidence is promising though not absolute. Multiple controlled studies show meaningful increases in hair density and thickness in androgenetic alopecia after three monthly sessions, with most patients seeing change from around month three. However, results vary, protocols differ between studies, and PRP works best when loss is caught early.

Most patients start with three sessions spaced about a month apart, then move to maintenance every three to six months. More advanced thinning may need additional sessions in the first year. We'll map out a realistic plan at your consultation.

The scalp is sensitive, so we take comfort seriously — topical numbing, and cooling or a nerve block where needed. Most patients describe brief stinging with each injection rather than sustained pain. The whole treatment takes 20–30 minutes.

Hair grows slowly, so expect months rather than weeks. Many patients notice reduced shedding first, then fine new growth around month three to four, with peak results at six months and beyond.

A temporary increase in shedding in the first month or two is normal and often a good sign — weaker hairs are being pushed out by new growth entering the cycle beneath. It settles on its own.

Because PRP is made from your own blood, there's no risk of allergic reaction or rejection. Side effects are usually limited to temporary tenderness, mild swelling or small bruises. We screen for blood disorders, certain medications and scalp conditions at your consultation.

PRP won't help where follicles have already died, so completely bald areas won't respond. We also screen out patients with blood or platelet disorders, active scalp infections, and some medications. If your hair loss stems from a thyroid issue or nutritional deficiency, we'll direct you to address that first.
